What is Brain Death?
It is an irreversible condition that results from a severe brain injury. All areas of the brain are damaged and stop functioning completely. Vital body functions are maintained by machines.
What is the difference between Brain Death and Coma?
In a Coma, which is a state of deep unconsciousness, the brain continues to function while the patient is able to breathe on his/her own and it is possible to come out of it. Brain Death results from such severe injury (like in a road accident or stroke) where the damage is permanent and all functions of the brain stop completely.
Will organ donation leave my body disfigured?
No. Professional surgeons take great care and do not disfigure the body.
What if my religion does not permit me to donate organs?
No religion objects to organ donation and transplantation. Consult religious leader for clarification.
Is there a cost to the donor or their family?
No. Once it is agreed upon, all expenses will be borne by the hospital.
Can I withdraw my consent to be an organ donor later?
Yes. If you change your mind, all you have to do is destroy the Donor Card and inform your family of your revised decision.
Can I sell my organs or buy them for any of my family member?
No, it is completely illegal in India
